Сретение (Господне). Религиозный праздник, отмечается 20 февраля. В США его называют тж. «день сурка» [Ground-Hog Day]. По народному календарю, если сурок в этот день, выйдя из норы, увидит свою тень, он снова погрузится в спячку ещё на 6 недель и весна будет поздняя; если же он тени не увидит и останется на поверхности, весна будет ранней. По этому поводу есть такой стишок:

If Candlemas Day be fair and bright,


Winter will have another flight;


But if Candlemas Day be cloudy and


rain,


Winter has gone, not to come again
